Up The Town Wrexham

When Hollywood superstars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney bought one of the world’s oldest professional football clubs - Wrexham AFC - for the modest sum of $2.5 million in 2020, the average number of attendees at the club’s home matches at Racecourse Ground was between 3 and 4,000.

Three years later The Red Dragons sell out their home fixtures in minutes even though they are still stuck in the National League - the fifth tier of the British football pyramid. Due to high demand they have also been forced to pause all new domestic memberships, one of many unexpected effects of having succeeded in building a brand with massive local appeal and a global outreach.

The ticketing and membership operations at Wrexham AFC are being run by one single employee. Peter Wynne describes himself as a failed footballer and part time musician with a background that includes building tipis for festivals and events all across the UK. Today he is single handedly responsible for ticket volumes stronger than a lot of clubs 2 or 3 league levels up are able to produce.

In this episode of TicketingPodcast.com, Peter Wynne gives us a unique behind the scenes report from what has rapidly become one of the world's strongest authentic feelgood sports brands.

He explains why it was necessary for Wrexham to take a step back and re-introduce print-at-home tickets when the interest for tickets exploded, and how digital away tickets will revolutionise ticketing operations all across the British leagues once they exist.
